New York Fashion Week Spring 2012. Collections And Designers

Last week was a wrap up for New York’s Fashion Week Spring Collection 2012. Packed with celebs, photographers, amazing designs, brands, clothes, attitudes, this fashion week gave us an idea on what clothes and trends to have in our next springs’ closet.

2012 Fashion Spring is indeed a celebration of the sun, focusing on: bold daring colors, pastels, fluid materials, flowers, prints, graphic prints and cut-outs, color blocking, men suits, soft blazers, couture sportswear, boxy bags and clutches in neon and ice-cream colors, a 1920’s inspiration with mid-calf- knee hemlines, and dropped waists,  asymmetric hemlines, glamorous, rich and luxuriant evening gowns. Ah… a rich spring fashion awaits us! Let’s have a look a some designers’ collections to have an idea…

Alexander Wang

Wang said, what inspired him for The 2012 Spring Collection were the men’s clothes at motocross and racing, and indeed his collection exudes the New York street style: sporty, edgy and sexy. It is a technical sportswear collection full of tiny skirts, zippers, geometric shapes, prints, see through material, color blocking, biker tops, skinny pants, pointy-heeled shoes. It’s young, urban, fast, strong and confident. It’s New York style!

BCBG Max Azria

The collection was packed with asymmetric hemlines, cut-outs, geometric shapes and cuts. Chiffon, color blocking and straps give an urban feeling to the whole floaty and feminine collection.

Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein was always known for femininity and pale vanilla like colors, and Spring 2012 in his view is no exception. Delicacy and fragility took over the catwalk as models appeared in svelte coats, mid-calf and knee length lingerie dresses, pure and simple. For Klein 2012 Spring is all about face powder pinks and light blues. A feminine and sexy collection.

Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera’s 2012 spring collection is all about colors and amazing materials and cuts. Jade greens, canary yellows, beautiful combinations of colors and textures, chiffon, organza – all pay homage to beauty and sophistication. I loved the Art Deco embroideries and the structured boxy purses. Everything was soft, alive and feminine.

Diane von Furstenberg

Diane’s collection seems to be a 1960’s lady like, but modern inspiration, packed with coloured prints, soft colors, flowing salopettes, elegant slouchy pockets, men suits, soft blazers, knee length hemlines, some Japanese inspiration shirts, boxy clutches… I loved the way she combined the slouchy, sporty, laid back style (materials, cuts, prints and colors) with the modern, edgy but feminine one. Her 2012 Spring breezy strong collection oozes a sexy sophistication.

Marchesa

Marchesa was about evening glamour. A bit of a 20’s inspiration, her collection had amazing dresses… a bit busy maybe, but artsy, rich, luxuriant in a very simple, clean way. It was all a mix and play of tulle, sequins, beads, feathers, hourglass shapes, sweeping the floor or mid calf length. In a sea of nudes, pinks, pales and soft blues or whites there was a playful pop of color in a model’s pink hair. Not bad!

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacob’s 2012 Spring collection was one of my favourites. A cool combination of Bob Fosse attitude, Amy Winehouse sexy rebellious feminine style and cabaret feeling. I absolutely loved the jackets a la Coco Channel combined with bright yellows and boxy bags in ice cream colors. The tight skirts with knee length hems made a statement through cut and texture, as the runaway was packed with futuristic materials and weird, yet amazing combinations: sequins, thick materials, tinsel, plastic, cellophanes, organza, reflecting textures – talk about the 21st century. A very soft and feminine collection with an original twist.

Michael Kors

Michael Kors dared to be different from it all… and good for him, as his safari-Africa-Jeep Concept was a total success. It made us think of vacation, warm weather, friendly colors… isn’t that what spring is all about? I loved the color palette: bronze, warm browns, oranges, reds, kakis, in raw or soft textures. The shoes were leather Roman sandals, comfortable and cool. Cross body bohemian bags, eye catching animal prints, strong yellows and sexy swimwear… Even the evening wear was no exception: animal printsss!!! A very daring, wild and wearable collection.

Narciso Rodriguez

A very structured architectural collection filled with many layers, lengths and geometric patterns, made out of cut-outs or color blocking. He used transparent materials, silk and satin, pops of color and asymmetric hemlines. Not a very big fan of his collection, I give him credit though for an overall very feminine, but soft-urban collection and for his amazing elegant flowing large pants with side slouchy pockets. Loved them!

Oscar de la Renta

My favourite this year, Oscar de la Renta gave us the perfection of art and fashion in a show. And what a show it was! It oozed extravagance and opulence in a tasteful luxurious way. The runway looked fantastic dominated by femininity, pre-raphaelite hair, ball gowns in explosive colors, dresses made out of  ‘table cloth white lace’. It was as if the models were on their way to a summer Sunday brunch or escaped an old rich painting. Amazing full skirted dresses, floral elements, neon pants, Channel like silk tweed cardigan in delicious pink, ivory elegance, luxuriant fur, boxy daring bags, large high waisted pants oozing a rich laziness – it was all a pleasure and delight to look at. The lime ostrich top and skinny pants, and the eye popping yellow gown with white embroidery and huge sleeves were quite eye catching. The collection was rich in color, beads, fur and lace. It was a collection inspired from opulence, elegance and sensuality.

Prabal Gurung

Gurung offered us a sporty, but lady like collection. It was a show about transparency, graphic cut-outs and strong blue-mauve-purple hues. Loved the structured blazers, the leather shoulder and waist details over a flowing spring lady like dress, and the deep grape sexy fitted evening gown. It was a very sophisticated collection.

Proenza Schouler

Proenza gave us a peep in Mid Century America, a collection inspired by the Jetsons or the sexy cool women throwing parties in such fashionable clothes, that hide  the sexy swimwear and the nonconformist house wife attitude. The collection had a lot of color, color blocking, mix matched prints, but mostly in a combination with black. Very edgy jackets, bodices, high collar shirts, shorts and skirts that reveal those swimsuits – a collection I enjoyed a lot.

Ralph Lauren

Another designer that time-travels us (this time in the 20’s) is Ralph Lauren, who’s collection seems like a show put on by the characters in Great Gatsby. Tea dresses, long fluid pants, georgette blouses, cross body purses, masculine double breasted jackets, lean long evening dresses in amazing colors – bring an homage to the Jazz Age. I liked the textures he used: light fluid materials, that gave the dresses that soft lingerie appeal, feathers, beads, and soft, ice cream, pudding colors. It was all gentle and feminine. The collection has romantic written all over it.

Rodarte

Rodarte’s spring is a Provence inspired one, dominated by the explosion of yellow and sunflowers. I liked the busy embroideries and prints in the pants suits, the bodices turning into full skirts, the yellows, the blues. The collection had a lot of mix matched prints, geometric cuts, asymmetric hemlines and original combination of textures. A very rock-chick celestial collection.

Vera Wang

Vera Wang dared to be different from her classic concepts, in her 2012 Spring Collection. She had prints, colors, cut-outs. The textures she used were very precious and fine, see through materials, to which she gave an urban, sporty vibe with the vests and jackets added over shorts, skinny pants, and skirts. A very feminine collection.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham gives Spring 2012 a 60’s vibe, through little shift dresses, kepi hats, hourglass dresses hugging the body, with a sporty twist given by the straps. The whole collection was quite sporty. Loved the leather leggings over the pointy heeled shoes, the fluid dresses, the structure coats, the fluid wide pants and strong colors she used. A very feminine and modern approach to the next year’s spring fashion trends.

Zac Posen

Zac Posen’s collection was all about the glitz and glamour of the evening. The old Hollywood style mixed with the modern attitude resulted in a a show of glamour, elegance, femininity, colors, over the knee hemlines, pretentious, luxuriant textures, rich looks, deep colors, feminine shapes… A Parisian Hollywood.
