The 2011 Oscars just ended, leaving a ‘Thank God’ exclamation for some, and a full of regret ‘Ohhhh…’ for others. Some say it was a bad Oscars this year, others were thrilled, while for others it was just O.K. The organizers seem to have taken a risk with Anne Hathaway and James Franco as presenters, since they were not so critically acclaimed, but anyway it was a fun show to watch, with funny/awkward moments, with an F-bomb dropper, with slight disappointments over the winners or losers, with happy moments, funny speeches… you name it!
And since we are talking about The Red Carpet event of the year, we can’t overlook the fashion, the glamor and the glitter of last night’s Oscars. Who was a fashion winner, who was your favorite and who could have done better? Let’s take a look at the beautiful ladies rocking (or not) the red carpet at the Oscars this year.
Red For The Red Carpet. Best & Worst Dresses
Quite a few ladies chose a look to die for in red last night (or so they thought). Anne Hathaway went vintage red in a Valentino gown, which I thought had a brilliant color… but that’s about it. I didn’t like the ruffled rose, nor was I crazy about how the dress fit her. Her makeup appeared to be too much. She has huge facial features so enhancing them was not such a good idea. Sandra Bullock, on the other hand, had the million dollar look last night! The perfect dress, the perfect color, perfect red lips, hair do, clutch and jewelry. The strapless Vera Wang dress turned heads and the actress looked elegant and beautiful in a classic but sexy red carpet gown. She’s my favorite!
And the red frenziee continues with a super hot Jennifer Lawrence wearing a Calvin Klein dress that reveals a body to kill for. Although she turned heads with this sexy look, the dress was just O.K., perhaps a bit too simple, tank top-like, swimsuit-like for the red carpet. But she’s a newbie so we’ll give her a pass this time. I loved her hair and her glowing makeup. Jennifer Hudson seemed to have been the happiest and most confident lady on the red carpet. She declared herself to be absolutely in love with her tangerine Versace halter gown, that she adored so much she wanted to sleep in. An A+ for her new body, for a beautiful makeup and hair and a lovely dress. Personally I thought it was a bit too in your face, too ruffled and not so flattering for her boobs. But she loved it and was all smiles in it, so that’s what counts eventually. Good for her! Penelope Cruz left us all in a shock at the sight of her perfect after-one-month-giving-birth-body! She looked beautiful, sexy, simple and happy in her red L’Wren Scott dress, next to her husband Javier Bardem.
Purple Elegance. Best & Worst Dresses
Natalie Portman was the lady of the night winning the Oscar for best actress for her role in ‘Black Swan’ and winning the title as one of the best dressed ladies of the night. Although a baby bum is hard to dress up for a red carpet event, she did a good job so far. She looks sweet and elegant in an off the shoulders plum Rodarte gown. Perhaps a bit too predictable, but she looks beautiful. Love the color! Her colleague from ‘Black Swan’, Mila Kunis is becoming a red carpet fashion expert. She usually goes for more daring, edgy looks, but last night she opted for a more feminine, romantic and natural look. And she gets my vote for best dressed at the Oscars. Her lace lavander Ellie Saab dress is so breathtaking and Mila compliments the look with simple makeup and side swept bangs. Stunning! Opinions went both ways for Scarlett Johanssen‘s Dolce & Gabbana lace plum open back dress. I thought she looked beautiful and happy with a dress that complimented her figure. Loved the makeup and the ring.
Nude-ish Tones. Best & Worst Dresses
Halle Berry was the queen of the red carpet last night. She had the perfect dress and her short pixie cut and gorgeus makeup complimented a stunning and beautiful Oscars look. She chose a crystal encrusted Marchesa gown and made us all feel relieved for her come-back to the old fashion best dressed habits. Loved it! I can’t say the same thing about Nicole Kidman, who seems to have a super annoying obsession for white gowns. And this event was no exception, so here she is in a very unflattering Asian inspired Dior couture gown. Her make up and hair looked good and even if she tried to put some color in there with her red pumps… it’s still a bummer. Nicole, get over the white phase ASAP!
Michelle Williams looked very clean, simple, pretty… boring. Nice pixie do, nice makeup, nice body, wonderful embelished Chanel dress, but it’s always nude with Michelle. For once we’d like to see her in something else. Step out of your comfort zone for once! Although only 14, Hailee Steinfeld was the princess of the red carpet. A future fashion icon. She looks adorable in her pale pink Marchesa gown, designed by herself, a one of a kind creation. Beautiful, age appropriate and complimented by a cute hairdo, natural makeup and nice clutch . Too bad for the shoes though. Mandy Moore chose a nude crystal encrusted Monique Lhuillier dress that fits her like a glove. Perhaps to some people it appears a bit too washed out, her makeup being somewhat natural as well, but she looks very sweet and elegant and her red lips are just the perfect touch of color. Nice!
Melissa Leo‘s F-bomb dropping was a right one if we take a look at her outfit (Marc Bouwer). Is that a dress or a long-sized-high-collar-lace shirt? Whatever. Maybe next time she’ll do better. Another pale bummer is Cate Blanchet‘s Givenchy dress. I am not crazy about the upper part of the dress, but I thought the lower part looked good (great texture and great length). She also rocked great jewelry and makeup. Too bad for the dress. Now don’t get me started on Florence Welch who seems to have a problem with comprehending the nature of the red carpet events. She should keep in mind that although they first celebrate the art in movies or music (see the Grammies), second of all they are a fashion event as well. We all know by now she has a soft spot for frumpy outfits, and this Valentino gown is no exception. Florence, enhance your beauty girl, don’t shove it under unflattering outfits!
Sparkles And Glitter. Best & Worst Dresses
A few day ago I saw some pictures of Gwyneth Paltrow rocking her bikini look on a beach somewhere, hence the glowing sun kissed skin and may I say that, although I absolutely love her shimmering Calvin Klein dress, it doen’t do her body much justice. She appears a bit too thin and shapeless, but other than that she is beautiful. Love the dress, the hair and the jewelry! Amy Adams is all sparkling in a form fitting blue L’Wren Scott gown. Nice combination of dress and jewelry and love the hair and makeup. Very elegant and red carpet appropriate.
Hilary Swank was one stunning lady this year at the Oscars. She wore an absolutely brilliant strapless Gucci gown. A combination of metal and feathers, an elegant pulled back up-do, natural makeup, lovely smile and there you have it… a look to die for! Love it! Anette Benning looked so elegant and quite edgy in her sparkling Art Duo gown made by Naeem Khan. Lovely jewelry and great attitude!
Black: A Red Carpet Must Do Or Not. Best & Worst Dresses
Reese Witherspoon opted this year for a very classic 60′s inspired look. She is wearing a Giorgio Armani Prive gown and a bouffant hair do. She does not look bad at all (in fact she resembles Julia Roberts a few years ago), if she wanted to look like a red carpet Barbie doll! She should take more risk with her fashion choices, she always seems to go for the simple safe look. Surprise us in a good way, next time Reese! O.K so Helena Bonham Carter came to celebrate the film event, or so she said. Is that suppose to be her excuse for horrible, crazy, unappropriate outfits? She makes no exception this time looking very HBC in a Colleen Artwood dress. Watch out Helena, you are starting to be very predictable!
I was very sorry to see Marisa Tomei looking sad and unflattering in a dark blue 1950′s vintage Charles James couture dress from Lily et Cie. The upper part of the dress is not that bad, but the lower part is a complete dissaster. Too bad Marisa, we know you can do better. Nice jewelry though! Sharon Stone left me speechless. I don’t know what was worse, her outfit or she thinking she rocked this looked. I can give her credit for a very sexy and confident attitude, but she went over the top with those feathers and that unbelivebly unflattering makeup. She looks older, Cruella-like and don’t get me started on that never-ending hair do. Too bad, because the one shoulder Christian Dior dress was not bad at all. In fact, it fitted her body beautifully, but she managed to screw up this one.
This is it for the red carpet fashion close up at the Oscars 2011. Feel free to share and comment with us your favorite and least favorite dresses and looks!
